Meditation is yoga at rest, a dynamic steadiness of body, breath, senses, and mind. This series will help you establish a meditation practice, whether you practice yoga or not. How do we steady a busy, over-stressed mind? Meditative stability is directly accessed by harnessing prana—universal life force—which this meditation series explores with conscious breathing. Prana rides the breath, nourishing our mind-body instrument, because it accesses the vitality that is the source of all life. Meditation is not just a mind game. With an energetic approach to meditation, we come to embody a natural and straightforward balance of vitalized alert presence and deep relaxation. Here, thoughts and emotions that usually agitate the mind resolve with the enriching influence of pranic vitality. At the same time, the mind remains dynamic and does not slip into a state of mindless stupor or withdrawal. As the speed of our mind-body instrument slows down, its depth and power increase. Tuning-in to these essential resources is truly healing. However, that is just the beginning. It is well-known that yoga poses help prepare us for meditation. It is also true that meditative experience invites us to step into a river of transformation that integrates the physical, energetic, conscious, psychic, and spiritual dimensions of our being, which fulfills the purpose of yoga—to yoke and unite with experience. Meditation becomes a “way of being” by which we develop an intimate relationship with ourselves and connect deeply with others.
